Thursday, November 16
Tuition is $85 per student for three classes, which includes entry fee for March 2018 student tournament. Classes are held from 3:30 - 5 pm at our Alameda location.
Who is this program for?
The Youth Arcade Academy is for Bay Area students ages 9-13 who have a sincere passion not only for playing videogames, but also in learning the exciting history of the pioneering games, and how to play them well!
Class will be led by arcade co-owner Shawn Livernoche, a certified, highly qualified K-12 English teacher, with experience teaching Language Arts, Technology, and History since 2002. Today, in addition to running both High Scores Arcade locations with his wife Meg, Shawn continues to extend his talent as a mentor and instructor by tutoring inner-city youth via in-person sessions and by maintaining a free web-based tutorial program geared towards assisting troubled students in passing standardized exams or obtaining their GED.
What are the course objectives?
All students will leave their first three sessions with an understanding of the most important and most resilient arcade videogames in history and how those games influenced the games we play today.
Students will become proficient at playing games such as Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Q-Bert, Centipede, Frogger, Galaga and other titles that boast popularity that has survived decades of industry growth and change.
Through instructor demonstration, practice, cooperative learning and competition, all students will strive for mastery of key gaming skill sets:
All students who attend 3 sessions of Youth Arcade Academy will participate in “Fortune and Glory Tournament 2” (Youth Edition) in March 2018 (Admission to Tournament is included in the tuition fee).
This is our opportunity to provide the youth with a rich and in-depth introduction to the classic games that grew an $100 billion-dollar-a-year industry and changed the way we relate to technology.
